CHISPAS FARM: Good organic food and a good business to support.
About 1.5 acres are under direct cultivation, but the rest of the property is an integral part of their farming system. In addition to a full range of organic vegetables, they grow beautiful flowers. You can meet them and buy their products at the downtown farmers' market on Saturday mornings from 7 to 11 (you can often spot me at that market, half-hidden behind an armload of Chispas Farm zinnias). You can also find them at the farmers' market that they helped to found, the Morningside Park market, on Thursdays from 3 to 6pm. The Morningside Park Market is a lively and thriving addition to our city, so be sure to congratulate them when you visit their stand. They are adding some great grapes and figs, so within the next few years we may be able to buy honeyed and aromatic muscat grapes, as well as other European table varieties, from our local farm.
Many people would like to eat more organic food but can't because it's more expensive than the chemically produced kind. Amanda and Eli have thought of that, too. Every Friday evening they open their farm to members of the public who want to help them pick, wash, and bundle their produce for the Saturday market. Bring a dish for the potluck dinner if you can, and you'll take home some organic vegetables in exchange for your help.
